Our inventory includes options for different terrains, lifestyles, and user preferences, all crafted with durability, comfort, and ease of use in mind. Whether you’re navigating your home, running errands, or traveling, we have an electric wheelchair to support your independence and mobility.

Choosing the Right Electric Wheelchair

Selecting the right electric wheelchair involves considering several key factors. First, assess your primary use: will you use it mostly indoors, outdoors, or for travel? For indoor use, prioritize models with a tight turning radius and compact dimensions. For outdoor use, look for wheelchairs with robust suspension, larger wheels, and sufficient battery range for longer trips. Weight capacity is another critical consideration—ensure the wheelchair can safely support your body weight. Comfort features like adjustable seating, cushioning, and footrests are also important, especially for extended use. Finally, consider portability; if you travel frequently, a lightweight, foldable model may be ideal. Our team at Galenus Medical is here to help you evaluate these factors and find the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

FAA Compliance for Electric Wheelchairs

For those who travel by air, FAA compliance is a crucial consideration. Many electric wheelchairs in our selection are designed to meet FAA standards for air travel, particularly regarding battery safety. Most of our models feature lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly approved for air travel when they meet specific watt-hour (Wh) limits—typically 300 Wh or less for a single battery or 160 Wh for spares. These batteries are often removable, allowing you to detach them for carry-on storage while the wheelchair frame is checked as luggage. Always check with your airline for specific requirements, but our FAA-compliant electric wheelchairs are designed to make travel smoother and more accessible.

Battery Wattage and Wheelchair Charging

Battery wattage is a key factor in the performance of electric wheelchairs. Our models typically feature lithium-ion batteries ranging from 100 to 300 watt-hours (Wh), balancing power and portability. Higher wattage batteries often provide longer travel distances but may be heavier, while lower wattage options are lighter and better suited for travel. Charging is straightforward—most electric wheelchairs come with a standard charger that plugs into a regular household outlet. A full charge typically takes 6-8 hours, though some models offer fast-charging options. We recommend charging overnight and avoiding complete battery depletion to extend battery life. Dual-battery designs are also available in some models, offering extended range and flexibility.

Distance Range of Electric Wheelchairs

The distance range of electric wheelchairs varies depending on the model, battery capacity, terrain, and user weight. Our selection includes options with ranges from 10 to 20 miles on a single charge under optimal conditions. Lightweight models designed for travel often offer around 10-15 miles, ideal for short trips or daily use. Heavy-duty models, built for more demanding use, can achieve up to 20 miles or more, depending on factors like speed, weight load, and terrain. Flat, smooth surfaces maximize range, while hills or rough terrain may reduce it. We provide detailed range specifications for each model to help you choose one that matches your daily needs.

Standard vs. Heavy-Duty Electric Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs come in standard and heavy-duty varieties to suit different needs. Standard electric wheelchairs are typically lighter, with weight capacities up to 250-300 pounds, and are designed for everyday use in homes, offices, or light outdoor environments. They often feature a compact frame and a tighter turning radius for maneuverability. Heavy-duty electric wheelchairs, by contrast, are built with reinforced frames and more powerful motors, supporting weights up to 400 pounds or more. These models offer enhanced durability, stronger suspension, and often a longer range, making them ideal for users needing extra support or those navigating varied terrains like gravel or grass. Both types are available in our lineup to ensure all users find a reliable option.

Wheelchair Sizes: Standard Width, Seat Height, and Footrests

Electric wheelchairs come in various sizes to accommodate different body types and environments. Standard seat widths typically range from 16 to 20 inches, with 18 inches being the most common for average adult users. Seat heights vary, generally between 18 and 22 inches from the floor without footrests. With adjustable footrests attached, the overall height and leg positioning can be customized for comfort, typically adding a few inches to the setup. For users concerned with small doorways, such as those measuring 28 inches wide, we offer compact models with total widths as narrow as 23-25 inches, ensuring easy navigation through tight spaces. Always measure your doorways and key areas to confirm fit, and our team can assist with precise specifications.

Folding Wheelchairs for Transport

For those needing portability, folding electric wheelchairs are an excellent option. These models are designed to collapse quickly and easily, often in seconds, making them ideal for transport in cars, SUVs, or even airplanes. Lightweight folding wheelchairs in our collection can weigh as little as 37.5 to 50 pounds, fitting compactly into most vehicle trunks. Some feature removable batteries and foldable frames for even easier storage. Whether you’re traveling locally or long-distance, these folding electric wheelchairs offer convenience without sacrificing functionality, allowing you to maintain mobility on the go.

Manual vs. Automated Reclining Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs may offer reclining features, available in manual or automated designs. Manual reclining wheelchairs require the user or a caregiver to adjust the backrest by hand, typically using a lever or mechanism. This option is simpler and often more affordable but may require assistance for operation. Automated reclining wheelchairs, on the other hand, use powered controls to adjust the backrest and sometimes the leg rests, offering greater independence and ease. These models are ideal for users who need frequent repositioning for comfort or medical reasons, such as pressure relief. Both types are available, allowing you to choose based on your needs and budget.

Review of the Panther: Awesome machine. Goes fast, has a lot of power, battery lasts more than a day. Culver moved the recline to a manual side mount that is easy to reach and it is MUCH better than the power recline. I was worried, but it is a MUCH better design. Culver spread out the wheel base on the Panther, making it much more stable. I can now recline while driving. The lowest speed is good for slow walkers like my grandson. Speed two was great for keeping up with the guys in the airport. I know they say it is safe, but I took the battery out easily and carried it into the cabin anyway. First flight, we left the joystick on and it got a little bent, making it hard for me to see speed. My son muscled it back up with little problem. Return flight, we easily unscrewed the handle and trapped it between the seats then used bungee cords to lock it tightly in the folded position. We did need to fold the chair up to slide the joystick handle out, but it is also easier to take the battery out slightly folded as well. So, fold slightly, take out the battery, loosen the joystick screw, take it out, tighten the screw so as not to lose it. slide the joystick between padded seats, fold it down, bungee cord around middle, and one from the foot rest to the back, and we had a safe se package for the airline to stow. It sounds like a lot, but all of that took less than 5 minutes and the folded wheelchair was ready to stow. Don’t forget the bungee cords. We use them to tie our luggage together to make it easier to drag through the airport anyway. Return trip was a little wait as they had to retrieve it from the hold and bring it to us. Once they brought it, it was fast remove of the bungee cords, shove them in the bag, install the battery and joystick, unfold the chair and lock it, and we were rolling in about 5-7 minutes. Speed is sweet and since covid ate up all of my joints and my spine, I just cannot do that run through the airport. In this machine, my long legged men have to keep up with me. My son, 6’3″ weighs about 300 pounds, and tried it. It went a little slower on take off which might be a good thing because it jumps out from under me. My battery may last a lot longer because of my lower weight and the chair is rated for a heavier person.Update to Shawk: I bought the Culver Shawk previously, and it was really great. Sometimes I would forget to hold the button long enough to transfer the joystick to power recline, and I ended up loaning it to my Dad who was fighting bone cancer. He loved it so much that the Dr made him stop using it when chemo got his cancer into remission. Dr made him go to therapy to get strong again. The only problem is that I must recline all the time due to spine issues, and the balance wasn’t as good for reclined driving in the Shawk.I was able to go to Kennedy Space Center and Gatorland, to a warehouse to pick counters, and plan to go to more events later. I am scheduled for hip replacement soon. It zips around and I can keep up. Be aware that when you turn it on it goes to fastest speed so you have to learn to take the speed down before going. I was pure dangerous with this thing. I have spine issues so need the recline. Remember to straightne up a bit when driving and you will be fine. This is more freedom than I have had for a long time. I can get into tight places, and it turns on a dime. Good chair!

I have been having an issue with my wheelchair that is less than a year old for months. It will randomly shut off when going up any sort of incline including my ramp into my car. It won’t power back on unless it is either recharged or the battery is unplugged. I have been unable to get in touch with the manufacturer by email, chat or phone. I’m now stuck with a very expensive paperweight. I highly advise steering clear of this chair, which is a real shame because it has features I was unable to find anywhere else.Edit- I just finished communicating with Galenus Medical customer service. The wheelchair is now still under warranty and useless. I’ve been unable to get in touch with the manufacturer via any method. Galenus Medical will not help beyond trying to get Culver to contact me, which they did not. I’ve now got a $1500 paperweight. In this situation both Culver and Galenus Medical have atrocious customer service. Now I’ve got to buy a new wheelchair, hopefully not from Galenus Medical.

First off, I never review products.I needed to review this because I know I was so nervous about which chair to buy. I have a medical condition where I pass out quite a bit, also I suffer from seizures. I have been stuck at home for almost 3 years since I got sick. This let me go to Disney with my husband!Things I love. It’s portable, my husband has to lift it for me into the car…but it fits in the back of our Honda CRV. It went through the parks all day and never lost power. It has recline and a foot rest, critical for me! These options are extremely useful for when you need to lay back for whatever you need may be. No flat tires.*Room for improvement- speed. I weight 120lbs and it was slow. On any kind of incline. It needs tail lights, it is low to the ground and people do not see me down there very well.So far…I like it. It’s not as posh as my big one at home but really convenient for trips.

Defective!!! A stressful hassle for a bedridden convalescing hemiplegic; otherwise a 5 star
I gladly received my wheelchair on June 4th, 5 days earlier before shipping schedule. However, the FedEx courier ignored delivery instructions to leave item at main reception, and sent it to shipping & receiving, thereby causing unecessary consternation before the item was finally tracked down after several hours by my guestThen, after the chair was hooked up and fully charged as per instructions, we realized to my utter disappointment that the joystick controller was not functional. All attempts to reach tech support has hitherto been futile, as they don’t pick upSo, I’m still stuck with what appears to be a lemon, with no feasible recourse for the unassisted bedridden hemiplegic I am, convalescing in a longterm care homeTried for help from Galenus Medical but hitherto to no avail either… it’s a stressful ordeal I purchased for myself. So, my advice is: Albeit the Culver Mobility’s Shawn model has all the necessary comforts, don’t risk the hassle, if proximity to their address in California will be a problem to seek help, should you face my similar predicamentI’d greatly appreciate if Galenus Medical could simply refund my money for me to quickly order another of the same model from the seller or send a replacement exchange asap, as I’m mobility-challenged to facilitate the routine return rigmarole. Thank you
