   When I first saw this anti-decubitus mattress I didn’t think I would be interested because I do not have any bedsores but then I remembered that since I do sit in my computer chair for hours at a time and that could cause the tender skin to break down, maybe some preemptive healing might be helpful at night.This inflatable mattress fits perfectly side to side and top to bottom with my bed. Now it weighs almost 9.5 pounds so it takes a little effort to unfolded and stretch it out over the bed.As shown in the Galenus Medical description and the company’s website, the mattress is designed to be used on top of the existing bedsheets but allows for the patient to be covered with a blanket for warmth or privacy. This mattress has no tiedowns on the corners or sides but a hospital bed has vertical panels on the sides and foot of the bed to keep the mattress (and patient) from falling out. But my bed does not have any of those, and the way I sleep the air mattress would probably be on the floor by the middle of the night, So I installed it above the mattress pad and under the mattress topper. And then my fitted sheet over that, and then the upper sheet and comforters. I installed it in the pumped up state to make sure it would not destroy the sheets if I installed it flat and then pumped it up. However, being pumped up means it does not flex very well when you’re trying to get the mattress topper and fitted sheet over it especially in the last corner. It’s like putting the fitted sheet over the last corner only a little harder; you may need a second person to help. Or an able person. That I have the foot of my bed somewhat elevated did not cause any difficulties.Sometimes brand-new plastic, especially flexible plastic, has a strong chemical odor. This did not. Now there is a removable section right about where your bottom would be positioned in the bed with its own tube connections to the system. This is designed that when the patient needs to go, the patient can be rolled on their side, the section be moved away and a bed pan put in that hole. This enables the nursing staff to more easily keep the patient clean. The removable section is not noticeable under the sheet and mattress topper but I wonder if it could function independently as an anti-decubitus seat cushion with the slowly alternating air pressure in the tubes helping prevent decubitus ulcers when seated in a chair.With an extension cord from my wall plug the pump motor can go at the foot of my bed where it is designed to be. One concern I had was would the motor be quiet or keep me awake? I can hear it when I am standing next to it but when I am in bed I cannot hear it at all. Even when I’m standing next to it it is quieter than my overhead fan and certainly quieter than my window air conditioner. It takes a while (20 to 30 minutes) for the initial total inflation to take place but after that it slowly deflates every other horizontal tube alternately in a 12 minute cycle, with each full tube having the tubes next to it either inflating or deflating. When the inflating tubes become full, then the adjacent tubes begin to deflate; a three stage cycle. But the bottom line is I get a very restful sleep and I feel my bottom is getting some preventative care.In conclusion: very highly recommend

   This mattress topper is comfortable and once adjusted to the softness/firmness level I want, I can get a great night’s sleep. I hope that with it automatically switching inflation levels every 12 minutes it will keep me from getting hot spots and sores.
