Our inventory includes options for different terrains, lifestyles, and user preferences, all crafted with durability, comfort, and ease of use in mind. Whether you’re navigating your home, running errands, or traveling, we have an electric wheelchair to support your independence and mobility.

Choosing the Right Electric Wheelchair

Selecting the right electric wheelchair involves considering several key factors. First, assess your primary use: will you use it mostly indoors, outdoors, or for travel? For indoor use, prioritize models with a tight turning radius and compact dimensions. For outdoor use, look for wheelchairs with robust suspension, larger wheels, and sufficient battery range for longer trips. Weight capacity is another critical consideration—ensure the wheelchair can safely support your body weight. Comfort features like adjustable seating, cushioning, and footrests are also important, especially for extended use. Finally, consider portability; if you travel frequently, a lightweight, foldable model may be ideal. Our team at Galenus Medical is here to help you evaluate these factors and find the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

FAA Compliance for Electric Wheelchairs

For those who travel by air, FAA compliance is a crucial consideration. Many electric wheelchairs in our selection are designed to meet FAA standards for air travel, particularly regarding battery safety. Most of our models feature lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly approved for air travel when they meet specific watt-hour (Wh) limits—typically 300 Wh or less for a single battery or 160 Wh for spares. These batteries are often removable, allowing you to detach them for carry-on storage while the wheelchair frame is checked as luggage. Always check with your airline for specific requirements, but our FAA-compliant electric wheelchairs are designed to make travel smoother and more accessible.

Battery Wattage and Wheelchair Charging

Battery wattage is a key factor in the performance of electric wheelchairs. Our models typically feature lithium-ion batteries ranging from 100 to 300 watt-hours (Wh), balancing power and portability. Higher wattage batteries often provide longer travel distances but may be heavier, while lower wattage options are lighter and better suited for travel. Charging is straightforward—most electric wheelchairs come with a standard charger that plugs into a regular household outlet. A full charge typically takes 6-8 hours, though some models offer fast-charging options. We recommend charging overnight and avoiding complete battery depletion to extend battery life. Dual-battery designs are also available in some models, offering extended range and flexibility.

Distance Range of Electric Wheelchairs

The distance range of electric wheelchairs varies depending on the model, battery capacity, terrain, and user weight. Our selection includes options with ranges from 10 to 20 miles on a single charge under optimal conditions. Lightweight models designed for travel often offer around 10-15 miles, ideal for short trips or daily use. Heavy-duty models, built for more demanding use, can achieve up to 20 miles or more, depending on factors like speed, weight load, and terrain. Flat, smooth surfaces maximize range, while hills or rough terrain may reduce it. We provide detailed range specifications for each model to help you choose one that matches your daily needs.

Standard vs. Heavy-Duty Electric Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs come in standard and heavy-duty varieties to suit different needs. Standard electric wheelchairs are typically lighter, with weight capacities up to 250-300 pounds, and are designed for everyday use in homes, offices, or light outdoor environments. They often feature a compact frame and a tighter turning radius for maneuverability. Heavy-duty electric wheelchairs, by contrast, are built with reinforced frames and more powerful motors, supporting weights up to 400 pounds or more. These models offer enhanced durability, stronger suspension, and often a longer range, making them ideal for users needing extra support or those navigating varied terrains like gravel or grass. Both types are available in our lineup to ensure all users find a reliable option.

Wheelchair Sizes: Standard Width, Seat Height, and Footrests

Electric wheelchairs come in various sizes to accommodate different body types and environments. Standard seat widths typically range from 16 to 20 inches, with 18 inches being the most common for average adult users. Seat heights vary, generally between 18 and 22 inches from the floor without footrests. With adjustable footrests attached, the overall height and leg positioning can be customized for comfort, typically adding a few inches to the setup. For users concerned with small doorways, such as those measuring 28 inches wide, we offer compact models with total widths as narrow as 23-25 inches, ensuring easy navigation through tight spaces. Always measure your doorways and key areas to confirm fit, and our team can assist with precise specifications.

Folding Wheelchairs for Transport

For those needing portability, folding electric wheelchairs are an excellent option. These models are designed to collapse quickly and easily, often in seconds, making them ideal for transport in cars, SUVs, or even airplanes. Lightweight folding wheelchairs in our collection can weigh as little as 37.5 to 50 pounds, fitting compactly into most vehicle trunks. Some feature removable batteries and foldable frames for even easier storage. Whether you’re traveling locally or long-distance, these folding electric wheelchairs offer convenience without sacrificing functionality, allowing you to maintain mobility on the go.

Manual vs. Automated Reclining Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs may offer reclining features, available in manual or automated designs. Manual reclining wheelchairs require the user or a caregiver to adjust the backrest by hand, typically using a lever or mechanism. This option is simpler and often more affordable but may require assistance for operation. Automated reclining wheelchairs, on the other hand, use powered controls to adjust the backrest and sometimes the leg rests, offering greater independence and ease. These models are ideal for users who need frequent repositioning for comfort or medical reasons, such as pressure relief. Both types are available, allowing you to choose based on your needs and budget.

Arthritis has left me unable to stand for more than one minute at a time; I have been house bound since 2013. No more! I purchased the Ranger in May with the hope of being able to attend the airshow at Oshkosh the end of July. I have just returned from there. Note that my Ranger is configured with three batteries. It worked much better than I had ever hoped for. I rode the Ranger about 3 to 4 hours per day at the show limited by my sensitivity to strong sunlight. The first two days, I recharged at night, but never saw the battery charge indicator drop from full. I intentionally did not charge the next two days, and I saw the charge indicator drop two bars (out of eight). The rolling surface changed dramatically at the show from smooth, polished concrete in the display hangars, to asphalt covered by coarse gravel at road intersections, to deep lush grass in the camping areas. The need for the max power controller became obvious. The display hangars were packed cheek-to-jowl with showgoers necessitating a slow speed. An opporator selected power level greater than two (out of five) resulted in a controller duty-cycle that caused a chattering and jerky movement (poor control). When set to a power level of one to two, the control was smoothly controllable with a max speed of one to two mph. In the gravel or grass, the chair needed near full power to reach three mph (a normal walk). And on open roads, full power resulted in a max speed of four to six mph. The chair managed steep ramps with grace, but beware any ramps that are carpeted! While not the fault of the chair, the tires can suddenly lose their grip on the carpet resulting in a very dangerous loss of control. I found myself two feet above the ground, on the ramp, when the chair nearly instantaneously turned 90 degrees and leaped toward the unguarded edge of the ramp. I suggest, if you need to negotiate a steep ramp with questionable traction, ask a friend or even stranger to “spot” you from the back of the chair. I found this works well. During my first three months with the Ranger I have found only one design, manufacturing, or material flaw with it. The chair’s only braking comes from what is called a “dynamic brake.” Dynamic braking ocs when the joy-stick is centered and the motor’s positive and negative electrical leads are shorted together by the motor controller to lock-up the motor; unfortunately, there is about a one second delay from the time you neutralize (center) the joy-stick until the dynamic brake is applied. This is normally adequate, but when I was on the ramp headed off the edge I needed an instantaneous brake. As far as I know, all the modern electric wheel chairs use a dynamic brake, but I suspect the delay in actuation varies from controller to controller design. Over-all, the Ranger appears to be a robust design in most of the ways I have available to test it. Oh, at the end of the show my back-side was killing me; so, I purchased a seat cushion made of three inches of “Tempur Foam.” I like the chair much better now. I am going to ask the good folks who manage this product if they can arrange for me to make additions to this evaluation; so, “stay tuned.” Good Luck to you all! Dunc’

This chair has been a game changer for me and my son, who was hurt in an auto accident in 2019. We have taken it on hiking trails, the beach, and evenon the rugged terrain in Iceland. It has enough power to get up steep inclines on rocky surfaces and to navigate packed sand on the beach in Oregon.

The photo is my new folding wheelchair in the back of the quiet van. No ramps rattling when we drive and no scratched bumpers. So sturdy and solid. My son put a rug in the well to cover the bumper when he lifts it out. It is not light but it is doable for him. As many comments have stated it is heavy and sincerely needs a handle and a latch so it doesn’t unfold. Truly unfolds that easily, like a lawn chair. It’s turning navigation is different from my ancient electric wheelchair. I’m learning. I took it off road (on a patch of grass) it traversed it like it was nothing. I am so happy, I can not get to areas I haven’t been close to in over 10 years.Apparently Medicare considers a folding wheelchair a recreational vehicle. Yes I can enjoy myself. I can go to the park and push my grands on a swing, I can have anyone willing pick me up and take me to a school concert, a restaurant, the library or a store. Yes I guess I can have some recreation. Isn’t it a shame, Medicare doesn’t think wheelchair bound people have that right. I hope they eventually see the error of their ways.Let me tell you about the cup holder, it is marvelous. It is se! It faces off the front of the opposite arm from the joystick. It is solid, it doesn’t wobble, omgoodness it actually hold a beverage in place. My son is impressed with the welds everywhere. Nothing is shaking loose. Was I apprehensive? Yes! Spending that much money makes me nervous, I’m 74 after all, my first new car was a ‘71 Duster and cost much less. But I bit the bullet and have been enjoying myself. I love the lumbar curve in the back, it fits me perfectly. This Grammy is headed to Florida in a few weeks, I mar get a ticket for speeding! Oh, the arm rest are so sturdy and also a perfect height.Enjoy!

Just received my power chair today. I am very impressed with the construction and ease of use.The manufacturing company does not return emails , but answered the phone and my questions quickly.03/19/2024. I spent hours riding it on the Mall Of America in MN. I am very pleased with the performance of this power chair. Plenty of power for this big guy thanks to two 300watt geared rear wheel drives. Takes a little while to get used to the touchy joy stick controller. Got used to it quickly and was making 180 degree zero turns in elevators. I had no trouble stopping when small children or adults stepped in front of me.Operation was flawless and you can feel the power from zero to top speed. The only negatives are there needs be a way to keep the chair from unfolding when lifting into the back of my suv. I have ordered some Velcro straps. It would also be helpfull to have well balanced grip areas to lift it or lower it. Know that it is heavier than the term light weight. My wife and I can lift it in and out. I am ambulatory, just in a weaker present state .Operations and charging are all well thought out an easy to do.The bottom line is I love this chair and happy to be able to go more places with my wife again!
