Whether you’re navigating your home, running errands, or traveling, we have an electric wheelchair to support your independence and mobility.
Choosing the Right Electric Wheelchair
Selecting the right electric wheelchair involves considering several key factors. First, assess your primary use: will you use it mostly indoors, outdoors, or for travel? For indoor use, prioritize models with a tight turning radius and compact dimensions. For outdoor use, look for wheelchairs with robust suspension, larger wheels, and sufficient battery range for longer trips. Weight capacity is another critical consideration—ensure the wheelchair can safely support your body weight. Comfort features like adjustable seating, cushioning, and footrests are also important, especially for extended use. Finally, consider portability; if you travel frequently, a lightweight, foldable model may be ideal. Our team at Galenus Medical is here to help you evaluate these factors and find the perfect fit for your lifestyle.
FAA Compliance for Electric Wheelchairs
For those who travel by air, FAA compliance is a crucial consideration. Many electric wheelchairs in our selection are designed to meet FAA standards for air travel, particularly regarding battery safety. Most of our models feature lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly approved for air travel when they meet specific watt-hour (Wh) limits—typically 300 Wh or less for a single battery or 160 Wh for spares. These batteries are often removable, allowing you to detach them for carry-on storage while the wheelchair frame is checked as luggage. Always check with your airline for specific requirements, but our FAA-compliant electric wheelchairs are designed to make travel smoother and more accessible.
Battery Wattage and Wheelchair Charging
Battery wattage is a key factor in the performance of electric wheelchairs. Our models typically feature lithium-ion batteries ranging from 100 to 300 watt-hours (Wh), balancing power and portability. Higher wattage batteries often provide longer travel distances but may be heavier, while lower wattage options are lighter and better suited for travel. Charging is straightforward—most electric wheelchairs come with a standard charger that plugs into a regular household outlet. A full charge typically takes 6-8 hours, though some models offer fast-charging options. We recommend charging overnight and avoiding complete battery depletion to extend battery life. Dual-battery designs are also available in some models, offering extended range and flexibility.
Distance Range of Electric Wheelchairs
The distance range of electric wheelchairs varies depending on the model, battery capacity, terrain, and user weight. Our selection includes options with ranges from 10 to 20 miles on a single charge under optimal conditions. Lightweight models designed for travel often offer around 10-15 miles, ideal for short trips or daily use. Heavy-duty models, built for more demanding use, can achieve up to 20 miles or more, depending on factors like speed, weight load, and terrain. Flat, smooth surfaces maximize range, while hills or rough terrain may reduce it. We provide detailed range specifications for each model to help you choose one that matches your daily needs.
Standard vs. Heavy-Duty Electric Wheelchairs
Electric wheelchairs come in standard and heavy-duty varieties to suit different needs. Standard electric wheelchairs are typically lighter, with weight capacities up to 250-300 pounds, and are designed for everyday use in homes, offices, or light outdoor environments. They often feature a compact frame and a tighter turning radius for maneuverability. Heavy-duty electric wheelchairs, by contrast, are built with reinforced frames and more powerful motors, supporting weights up to 400 pounds or more. These models offer enhanced durability, stronger suspension, and often a longer range, making them ideal for users needing extra support or those navigating varied terrains like gravel or grass. Both types are available in our lineup to ensure all users find a reliable option.
Wheelchair Sizes: Standard Width, Seat Height, and Footrests
Electric wheelchairs come in various sizes to accommodate different body types and environments. Standard seat widths typically range from 16 to 20 inches, with 18 inches being the most common for average adult users. Seat heights vary, generally between 18 and 22 inches from the floor without footrests. With adjustable footrests attached, the overall height and leg positioning can be customized for comfort, typically adding a few inches to the setup. For users concerned with small doorways, such as those measuring 28 inches wide, we offer compact models with total widths as narrow as 23-25 inches, ensuring easy navigation through tight spaces. Always measure your doorways and key areas to confirm fit, and our team can assist with precise specifications.
Folding Wheelchairs for Transport
For those needing portability, folding electric wheelchairs are an excellent option. These models are designed to collapse quickly and easily, often in seconds, making them ideal for transport in cars, SUVs, or even airplanes. Lightweight folding wheelchairs in our collection can weigh as little as 37.5 to 50 pounds, fitting compactly into most vehicle trunks. Some feature removable batteries and foldable frames for even easier storage. Whether you’re traveling locally or long-distance, these folding electric wheelchairs offer convenience without sacrificing functionality, allowing you to maintain mobility on the go.
Manual vs. Automated Reclining Wheelchairs
Electric wheelchairs may offer reclining features, available in manual or automated designs. Manual reclining wheelchairs require the user or a caregiver to adjust the backrest by hand, typically using a lever or mechanism. This option is simpler and often more affordable but may require assistance for operation. Automated reclining wheelchairs, on the other hand, use powered controls to adjust the backrest and sometimes the leg rests, offering greater independence and ease. These models are ideal for users who need frequent repositioning for comfort or medical reasons, such as pressure relief. Both types are available, allowing you to choose based on your needs and budget.

We bought this Rubicon Model 1 as a supplement to our Jazzy Passport. We have had the Jazzy for over a year and put around 500 miles on it. It is a workhorse and never failed. The Rubicon is nearly half the price and 38 lbs vs the Jazzy Passport 68 lbs. That lighter weight for easier handling is what you are buying with the Rubicon. Not durability under heavy use. The Rubicon folds up as tight and easily as the Jazzy. With one caveat. The Jazzy, when folded, is on its 4 sets of anti-tipover wheels and stands straight up. This one rests on the tip over wheels and the main wheels and tilts at a 30 degree angle. But the main wheels are locked / engaged and so it cannot roll unless you tip it further down onto only the tip-over wheels. But by then. it is 2 ft too low to the ground for my 6′ frame. So I have to fold it exactly where I plan to lift it.We thought the handles on the Rubicon would come in handy. Especially if something went wrong like the battery discharging. But the back wheels remain locked to the motors at all times. With no way to disengage like with the Jazzy. So there is no possibility to use it as a push chair. With that said, even though the wheels are engaged, the motors will still spin when the wheels are tensioned. That is to say, you have to make extra sure to have the wheelchair like “hand brakes” on each wheel. Else it moves backwards too easily as you try and get out of the chair. The jazzy wheels are fixed / locked by the motors or electronic brakes. With no chance of moving (and they do not have any kind of manual wheel locks).Rubicon mentions automatic braking. There is no such thing. When you release the joystick and it recenters, the chair continues to roll for another few feet. No braking at all. Again, unlike the Jazzy which definitely brakes and you stop on a dime. They mention pneumatic wheels. Which implies air filled. This is a requirement with the Jazzy for us because we use it on daily walks of 2-5 miles outside on sidewalks and such. You need that extra cushioning when outside. These wheels are solid plastic — period. No pneumatic about it. And likely not to last anywhere near as long. The Rubicon is well built and finished; as you might expect from an American manufacturer putting higher standards on the Chinese manufacturer. But to get that lightweight, it is very minimal and about the same (or worse) than a fold-up, portable transport chair. When you go over an uneven surface (even a carpet to floor transition) it twists and turns a bit like a roller coaster. Well, not that bad. But not as solid as the Jazzy. The manual is for some different version or model then what they send. The battery is hardwired to the chair and not removable. Ours came missing the single bolt holding the battery to the chair — the battery was dangling from the chair by the wire when we took it out of the box. The charger is super-lightweight and larger than a typical “brick” charger for a laptop or similar (2x larger than our Jazzy charger). Oddly, it has a PC style 2″ fan in it which is very noisy. There is not a single mark or label on the charger so you have no clue what the amperage or voltage is. No ability to replace it with an equivalent if it ever goes out. Given everything I read here and elsewhere, I do not expect any sort of customer service, warranty service or the like is really available. Still waiting to hear about the missing bolt. (I found a bolt and nut in the garage that is working for now.)It essentially comes fully assembled. You just have to pop on the two anti-tipover wheels that have button locks. And slide the joystick controller onto the arm bracket. And you are ready to go. The battery is not removable, as mentioned, and so you have to charge it while still connected in the chair. There are three speed settings versus the Jazzy five. And, most annoying, the Rubicon engages the horn anytime you have the joystick in “backup” position. Making the chair make an annoying sound all the while you may be backing up. Think of like a garbage truck or construction machinery with audible backup warnings. If we have to destroy the speaker so there is no sound from the horn; we would not mind. Definitely get a cushion (we have a lumber support cushion on the Jazzy as well). As all they are providing is a web material seat and back.Overall, you are getting what you are paying for and likely expect. A lightweight, light build, electric chair. We use the Jazzy daily for outdoor walks; as mentioned. And amusement parks and such if that is ever in the cards. The Rubicon will stay in the car to be used for short distance and duration outings such as the grocery store, some restaurants with longer walks, the mall (if we ever go again) and such. Occasional use on very flat surfaces.

This power wheelchair is light enough for me to pick it up and put it in the trunk of my car. I am an above knee amputee. I keep a walker in my trunk. I roll up in my wheelchair, open the trunk, take out the walker, pick the wheelchair up and put it in my trunk. Then I use the walker to get it into my car. This gave me independence I did not have before. I gave it 5 stars 🌟

I unpacked this two days ago, because I am in a wheelchair I had someone else help me to take it out of the box, open it up and install the battery and the joystick. It was as described in the video. The only thing that seems to be different is that the wheels appear to be a hard plastic material rather than the softer more rubbery wheels that show in the photo on Galenus Medical. When I read the reviews, I wondered if people were talking about two different wheelchairs because someone loved it and others thought it was nothing like what was advertised. I can’t say about reliability since I haven’t even sat in it yet. I’m waiting for someone else to be here with me in order to try it out for the first time , I will post an update once I see how it runs.UUPDATE. I had family here and tried it out. Not very stable. It moves when you get in and out of it so best to have someone else with you when using it. Or put its back to a wall. It functions well on flat ground, but on pavers, you feel the bumpy ride (no shock absorbers). The seat is okay but would not be supportive for long periods of time. I cant fold it myself, since I am truly wheelchair or walker dependent. But I think it will be good for short trips or to bring when visiting family. And the wheels really are as pictured. They are just shinier, so they appeared to be more like plastic, but they truly are rubber., I have not tried it on inclines. I have found the battery doesn’t hold its charge even if it’s just sitting. So be sure to recharge it fully before planning to use it.

It’s very fast. I was passing my friend who accompanied me on a doctors appointment who was walking beside me in the hallway.Very maneuverable. Highly recommendedBy the way, it has a very crucial connection at the back of the chair connecting the joystick to the battery. the instruction manual fails to even mention this and of course it’s useless until the connection is made. The way to connect it was shown in detail in a YouTube tutorial on how to set up this chair. Be sure to watch that video if you purchase it.This is one of the best items I have ever purchased.
